Your dentist will provide instructions to help you recover as quickly as possible without developing complications. For example, your dentist likely closed the extraction site with stitches to avoid tearing or infection. Many patients wonder about these sutures. How long will they last? Do they need to be removed or will they dissolve on their own? Keep reading to find out!

Will My Stitches Dissolve?

Often, dentists use dissolving stitches after a tooth extraction, but it’s not a guarantee. If they use standard sutures, they’ll notify you when you need to return to have them removed. Typically, this is about 7 to 10 days following your surgery.

Otherwise, if they used dissolving stitches then they’ll dissipate in a few days to one month. How long it takes depends on the extent of the procedure, the stitch size and type, and the material used. Your dentist will give you more detailed information based on your specific circumstances, so you know what to expect.

How Do I Care for My Stitches?

It’s important to follow any aftercare instructions your dentist gives to you with careful attention to detail. The sutures placed will help form a blood clot over the extraction site, which is key to avoiding dry socket. If the blood clot over the incision becomes dislodged, it leaves the underlying nerves exposed which causes pain and slows your recovery time. Many dentists ask that you:

Rinse gently with salt water after 24 hours. Do not swish or spit vigorously but allow the water to fall out of your mouth.

Use antibacterial rinse to decrease the chance of infection if directed to.

Take prescribed antibiotics until they are all gone.

Avoid flossing or brushing the site itself for 3 to 7 days, or as long as your dentist allows.

What Can Damage Stitches?

You’ll also be given dietary guidelines to follow while your mouth heals. Steer clear of anything that could damage the stitches, like hard food or large, chewy bites. Choose soft foods like smoothies, yogurt, scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, and soups, instead.

Also, you should also avoid:

Drinking through a straw.

Smoking.

Drinking hot liquids.

Strenuous activities or exercise.

If your stitches are intended to dissolve but have lasted longer than expected, feel free to call the dentist. They’ll let you know if you need to come in to have it taken care of or offer information to help you remove them at home.

Now that you know what to expect, you can better care for yourself and enjoy a swift and smooth recovery!

About the Practice

Our skilled dental team at Baldwin Family Dental offers a full range of dental services no matter your age.
