Toothaches

First, use dental floss to check if anything is caught between your teeth and remove it if possible. Take acetaminophen or a similar pain reliever if the discomfort persists after flossing. Sometimes swelling might accompany a toothache, so apply a cold compress to the affected area if you need to.

Knocked-Out Tooth

Find the tooth immediately. Do not touch the root; always handle it by the crown instead. The best way to preserve a lost tooth is to put in back in its socket and hold it in place with your tongue; if that’s not possible, put it in a container of milk instead. Then get to our dental office as quickly as possible so replantation can be attempted.

Broken/ Chipped Tooth

Use gauze to stop any bleeding that occurs and cover the jagged edges of the tooth with sugar free gum or dental wax; otherwise, you could cut the inside of your mouth by accident. If you still have the broken pieces of the tooth, keep them safely stored and bring them with you to your appointment.

Check the restoration to see if it’s still intact. A crown can sometimes be reattached to the tooth with sugarless gum or toothpaste. Be sure to make an appointment as soon as possible; even if the tooth doesn’t hurt, it will still be vulnerable to damage or decay until a proper restoration has been attached to it.

How to Prevent Dental Emergencies

  • Brush and floss after every meal, or at least twice a day to keep the teeth and gums clean and free of the bacteria that can lead to cavities.
  • Visit Dr. Waheed twice a year for checkups so that small problems can be identified and treated early.
  • Get a custom mouthguard to protect your teeth while playing sports. Also consider getting a nightguard if you grind your teeth while sleeping.
  • Don’t chew on hard objects or open packages with your teeth.

The Cost of Treating Dental Emergencies

We can only give an estimate of the cost for treating your dental emergency once we’ve been able to examine your teeth and gums and figured out the extent of the damage. Some treatments will be more costly than others, but it’s important to have true dental emergencies taken care of right away; if they grow worse, they’ll only become more complex and even pricier to treat. Regardless of the problem, we’ll always aim to provide efficient, effective care that fits into your budget.
